An earthquake of magnitude 6.7 hit Papua in Indonesia on Thursday, October 16, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS) said.

Preliminary details, as backed by the Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre, indicated the earthquake occurred at 3:48 pm ChST. No tsunami threat had been issued at the time of writing.

At a depth of 70 km (43.5 miles), the quake’s epicentre was 200 km from the city of Abepura.

The latest natural disaster shocker comes days after a tsunami threat engulfed the Philippines and Indonesia following a 7.4 magnitude earthquake in the Mindanao region. Moreover, Papua in Indonesia itself was rattled by a 6.1 magnitude earthquake merely weeks ago.
