NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — The Norfolk School Board has narrowed the field of candidates to replace former superintendent Dr. Sharon Byrdsong down to five, and interviews with them will take place later this month and in early November.

The board, by a 4-3 vote back in June, terminated Byrdsong without cause, and she received a year's severance pay — a Freedom of Information Act request showed Byrdsong's most recent base salary and deferred compensation totals totaled more than $293,000. Byrdsong's contract was to expire June 30, 2026. Byrdsong, who had been appointed superintendent in February 2020, had worked with Norfolk Public Schools for 26 years.
