The trial of well-known filmmaker Tumpe Mtaya, popularly known as Phwedo, is expected to continue today at the Principal Resident Magistrate Court in Lilongwe.
According to reports, the case will now be handled by the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) after the State prosecutors earlier failed to bring key witnesses before the court.
Confirming the development, Director of Public Prosecutions Dzikondianthu Malunda said the case is scheduled to proceed this afternoon.
Phwedo is accused of repeatedly having sexual intercourse with a minor and defiling a girl under the age of 16 serious charges that carry heavy penalties under Malawi’s Penal Code.
