MEMPHIS, Tenn. - The Firestone Rubber and Tire plant began operating in Memphis in the 1930s. The plant closed in the 1980s. Since the closure, the land has been vacant for decades. An initial proposal to build a new Shelby County Justice Center on the land sparked outrage by people who live in the New Chicago neighborhood in North Memphis.
After many protests and speaking and a number of Shelby County Commission meetings, commissioners took the land off the list of proposed sites for a new jail. A major win for people living in New Chicago. A question still remains: what should go in the old land?
