India’s passport has lost some of its global mobility. In the Henley Passport Index 2025, India ranks 85th, falling five places from its 80th position in 2024. Indian passport holders can now travel visa-free or with a visa-on-arrival to 57 countries, down from 62 last year, marking a clear decline in travel freedom.

Despite this dip, India’s passport remains one of the most economical globally when measured by “cost per year.” A standard passport, valid for ten years, offers relatively high value compared to many other nations.

India’s highest-ever rank on the Henley Passport Index was 71st in 2006.
