Following a lengthy tenure in law enforcement, the Aberdeen City Council recently voted to make Police Chief Dave McNeil the next city manager. He was officially appointed to his new role on Oct. 6.

The city says a process has begun to hire a new chief for the Aberdeen Police Department. According to McNeil, that decision will be announced Oct. 17, with the nomination then going to City Council a few days later for consent. The goal for the new police chief is to be in office by the first week of November. McNeil says he will remain as chief until at least Oct. 20 to assist with the transition.

McNeil’s legacy of public service includes more than 33 years with the Aberdeen Police Department. The Elk Point, South Dakota, native has served the last 11 years as chief but has 26 overall year
