Family members of the Balibo 5 journalists have marked the 50th anniversary of their brutal murder by visiting a memorial tree in the Melbourne suburb of St Kilda.

They say they are still overwhelmed by grief and anger having fought for justice for their loved ones for five decades with no result.

They had appealed to the Foreign Minister for an apology for the way they have been treated by successive governments. They also wanted the release of ‘secret’ documents which reveal how much the Australian Government knew about the murders and when they knew it.

But Foreign Minister Penny Wong would not do an interview to mark the anniversary, instead releasing a statement saying the government “mourns” the loss of the journalists and knows a lack of justice has “not lessened the pain or brou
