BILOXI, Miss. (WLOX) - For those trying to buy a home located in a flood zone, they’ll need flood insurance to get a mortgage. A policY from the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) is usually the cheaper way to go.
However, new policies are being written during the government shutdown, and Tom Quinn with Keesler Federal Credit Union says some buyers may not qualify for a mortgage.
Some buyers may find themselves in a holding pattern.
“We’re pushing those closings back, hoping the government comes back on, or quoting a private option,” explained insurance advisor Conner Daughdrill.
Daughdrill notes that flood insurance outside of the national program is available.
“If we were originally moving forward with the NFIP, the private option may be a little higher,” he added.
