WILLIAMSPORT — The current mayor of Williamsport would be unable to run for a third term under a term limits ordinance the City Council adopted Thursday night.
As amended before the final vote, the mayor is limited to two consecutive terms, while members of council, treasurer and controller could hold office for three.
Council chose not to accept the suggestion of solicitor Austin White to insert in the ordinance that a current officer holder could seek one additional term without being in violation.
Without that provision, Mayor Derek Slaughter, who is in his second four-term, is prevented from seeking a third in two years.
The timing of the ordinance does not affect Councilwoman Liz Miele, who is seeking her fourth term on Nov. 4.
