Engel Stadium will soon be torn down to make room for a women's athletic complex, says a University of Tennessee at Chattanooga spokesperson.

Engel Stadium is the former home of the Chattanooga Lookouts from 1930 to 1999, and was used as a filming location for the movie "42."

Recognizable names like Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, and Willie Mays all played in the facility.

In March, UTC received a contribution to build the new women's athletics facility. At that time, it was said to be at the UTC sports complex and the stadium near East 3rd Street.

A UTC spokesperson says it will join the new Hamilton County Health Department, which is currently at the site of Engel Stadium.

UTC purchased the stadium and surrounding land in 2003.

UTC says it is not clear when the project will be complete.
