How do you start a movement? The National Healing Forest Initiative (nationalhealingforests.ca) began with a conversation between two strangers. Ten years later, there are more than 30 healing forests in Canada.

In May 2015, Patricia Stirbys, an Indigenous lawyer and a member of Cowessess First Nation in Saskatchewan, and Peter Croal, a geologist and former civil servant, participated in a walk for reconciliation in Ottawa to mark the release of the findings of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission. Ten thousand people walked in Canada’s capital city that day to show support for transforming and renewing the relationship between Indigenous Peoples and non-Indigenous Canadians and Stirbys and Croal randomly ended up walking beside each other.
