Actor Ed Williams, who was best known for his roles in the original “Naked Gun” movies and on the TV show “Police Squad!,” has died. He was 98.

Williams died Oct. 2 in Los Angeles, his granddaughter Stephanie Williams told The Hollywood Reporter , which first reported the news Thursday.

Born Nov. 26, 1926, in San Jose, California, Williams earned more than 30 movie and television acting credits during his career, according to his IMDb page . He was a broadcasting and speech teacher at Los Angeles City College in the early 1980s before turning to acting full time. His first role was cast as Mr. Olson on “Police Squad!,” in which he appeared in six episodes.
