PORTSMOUTH, N.H. —

Dozens of people throughout New Hampshire have reported that their wells are going dry because of the ongoing drought.

The state's Department of Environmental Services said a dry well means there's little to no water coming into the home – an emergency situation that they're asking anyone dealing with to report .

At least 76 homes have reported that their taps are dry because of the ongoing drought.

DES said wells can be unpredictable this time of year. This year is worse than usual because the state has not experienced such a severe drought in decades.

The state said that most wells that are running dry are dug wells in older homes, which are shallower than wells drilled into bedrock.
