A 19-year-old P-plater has been caught driving at an alleged speed of 156km/h in Melbourne's south-east this morning.

Police responded to reports of a speeding Ford Falcon overtaking traffic outbound on the Monash freeway in Wheelers Hill at around 1.30am.

Officers intercepted the vehicle after it allegedly reached speeds of up to 156km/h.

The driver from Berwick has been a provisional driver for less than a year and is expected to be summoned for driving offences.

His license was suspended on the spot, and the Ford was impounded for 30 days at $1046.80.
