LAS VEGAS (KLAS) -- The chief of Nevada Capitol Police has resigned months after someone stole a rifle from a car assigned to the governor’s security detail, the 8 News Now Investigators have learned.

Chief John Letos resigned on Monday, a Department of Public Safety spokesperson confirmed. The department did not provide a reason for the resignation, citing the state’s personnel laws.

Letos oversaw the unit, which secures state buildings; and the Dignitary Protection Detail, which offers security for the governor and other high-ranking officials.

Letos’ resignation comes months after a fully automatic submachine gun assigned to Gov. Joe Lombardo’s security detail was stolen from an unmarked state vehicle. Two people face charges connected to the theft.
