Maryland Rep. Johnny Olszewski unsuccessfully tried to speak on the floor of the U.S. House of Representatives on Friday to call on Speaker Mike Johnson to swear in a recently elected Democratic representative from Arizona.
Adelita Grijalva won a special election Sept. 23 to fill the seat held for 22 years by her late father, Rep. Raúl Grijalva, who died in March. While the House has not held a formal session in the two weeks since the government shutdown began, it has convened brief pro forma sessions, including one Friday. The session was adjourned after a few minutes without Olszewski, who represents the state’s 2nd District, being recognized.
