MINOT, ND (KXNET) — All hay bales must be removed from North Dakota highways by the end of the month, all in the name of safety.

North Dakota Department of Transportation district engineers are urging farmers to remove all hay bales off North Dakota highway rights-of-way, by November 1.

Larry Gangl, a Bismarck District Engineer, said this time of year, they are preparing for the winter. He said if the bales are left out, it will cause issues with snow management, in turn causing drifts. But even without snow, they could potentially cause safety hazards.

"Vehicles, if they travel off the roadway, you know, they expect a distance where, you know, they're off the road, but it's going to be clear of obstructions," Gangl said. "Well, a bale can be a big obstruction for a vehicle that hits th
