QUINCY (WGEM) -New research by an Australian research organization finds females carry a higher genetic risk of depression than males.

Malinda Vogel, Midwest Counseling Services Counselor, said women are more at risk of depression because of metabolic symptoms. However, she said genetics is not the only cause of depression for women.

It can also come from past trauma or loneliness.

Vogel said there are some signs family and friends can look out for in someone struggling with depression.

“You know, we all have our down days, and people who are depressed have predominantly down days,” Vogel said. “They don’t really ever seem to come out of them. You know, they’re feeling sad, withdrawn, sometimes very tearful.”
