GASTONIA, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) -- A cat is dead in Gaston County after being exposed to a rabid skunk this week.

According to Gaston County officials, Animal Care Enforcement responded Tuesday morning to a call that several cats had potentially been exposed to a skunk showing neurological issues in the 800 block of Mary’s Grove Road in Cherryville.

None of the cats were vaccinated, and one died as a result of the attack. The remaining cats were quarantined until the test results were received. There was no human contact with the skunk.

The skunk was sent to the NC Laboratory of Public Health in Raleigh on Wednesday, and on Friday a report confirmed that the skunk tested positive for rabies.
