Idaho State Police have transported more than 50 convicted criminals in the country illegally from Idaho county jails to federal custody for deportation under a new state program.
Gov. Brad Little's Operation No Return uses emergency funds to remove individuals who completed jail sentences and would otherwise be released back into Idaho communities. The program focuses on those convicted of violent crimes and drug offenses, according to a news release from Little.
The transports are part of Idaho's agreement with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement under the 287(g) program, which allows state and local law enforcement to perform immigration functions under ICE oversight.
