HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - The Honolulu Police Department is warning the public about a recent rise in reports of a sneaky phone scam tactic.
Caller ID spoofing is a type of scam where fraudsters mask their real phone numbers with ones that appear to be from an actual business or agency, like an insurance company or DMV, to trick victims into trusting their phony legitimacy.
Scammers are then more easily able to manipulate victims into sharing personal information over the phone.
Tips from HPD:
Don’t rely on the caller ID. Scammers can fake numbers to make their calls look legitimate.
If you answer the call, hang up immediately and call the company back using the official number listed on its website.
