Australian Jack Miller has become the first local MotoGP rider since the legendary Casey Stoner to qualify on the front row at Phillip Island.
In a red-hot qualifying session on Saturday, Frenchman Fabio Quartararo set a lap record to claim pole, pipping in-form Italian Marco Bezzecchi in second.
But Pramac Yamaha rider Miller surprised the rest of the grid, lifting himself from Q1 to secure third.
Proving his qualifying effort was no fluke, Miller finished fourth in the afternoon sprint race, setting up a tilt at greatness in Sunday's main event. Loading Twitter content
Bezzecchi secured a comfortable win, finishing ahead of Raul Fernandez to make it the first Aprilia 1-2 in a sprint race.
Pedro Acosta was third, with Miller just shy of a podium by 0.066 seconds.
