JEFFERSON PARISH, La. — The Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office is investigating after a woman in custody at the Jefferson Parish Correctional Center was found dead Saturday morning.

Sheriff Joseph Lopinto’s office reported that around 1:15 a.m., deputies discovered the woman slouched over in her housing area at the jail. After jail staff entered the area, they found the woman was unresponsive.

A sheriff’s office spokesperson said life-saving measures were administered by the on-site medical staff and responding emergency medical services, but the woman was pronounced dead on the scene.

An autopsy will be performed to determine the official cause of death. Authorities said there is no further information available at this time as the incident is under investigation.
