Damaging winds, penny-sized hail and heavy rainfall are all in the forecast for parts of Michigan today. Even if you’re enjoying some sunshine now, be prepared for the forecast to flip into unpleasant territory by later this afternoon and evening.

According to the National Weather Service team in Grand Rapids, we should expect scattered storms this afternoon. Strong to severe storms are more likely to crop up south of I-96. The timing for these are expected to be 2 p.m. to 8 p.m.

“Damaging winds to 60 mph and locally heavy rainfall causing nuisance flooding in low lying/flood prone areas are the main threats, along with small hail,” the NWS meteorologists said.

“A brief tornado cannot be ruled out south of I-94, east of Battle Creek.”
