WEST SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) - Riverdale Street in West Springfield will be shut down Saturday night into Sunday morning while a stop-log flood wall exercise is conducted.
West Springfield Mayor Will Reichelt stated that on Saturday night, crews will put up the levee system's "stop-log" flood wall structure, which spans the full width of Riverdale Street/Route 5. In order for operations to be completed safely, the road will be closed from 11 p.m. on Saturday until 6 a.m. on Sunday.
Traffic will be detoured while work is taking place, with routes outlined on a map shared by Mayor Reichelt.
This flood wall exercise is conducted once every five years by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to make sure that flood protection systems within the community are fully functional. Drivers in the ar
