IOWA CITY, Iowa. — Penn State’s clash with Iowa marked a new chapter in the 2025 season.
Terry Smith replaced James Franklin as the interim coach. Ethan Grunkemeyer slotted in for Drew Allar at quarterback after Allar suffered a season-ending injury against Northwestern.
The matchup was a whirlwind, featuring turnovers, a questionable special teams decision and rejuvenated offenses in the second half — it was Iowa who pulled away with a 25-24 win.
Penn State got off to a hot start, as safety Zakee Wheatley snagged his first interception on the third play of scrimmage to set up the offense at the Iowa 35-yard line. 10 plays later, it was running back Kaytron Allen who crossed the pylon on a 1-yard run to give the Nittany Lions a 7-0 lead.
