Before you even set foot inside a charity shop , you can be certain there'll be a collection of DVDs, 1,000-piece jigsaws and second-hand clothes inside. But occasionally, you come across an item that catches your eye.

For one woman, that item was a pair of $6.99 (£5.24) earrings hanging on a rail amongst an assortment of costume jewellery. After examining the earrings more closely, she chose to polish them up and have them valued, suspecting they might be worth more than their bargain price tag.

On Reddit, she posted detailed photos of the earrings along with a receipt showing their appraised value - revealing it to be $4,682 (£3,445).
