From one shot off the lead overnight, Adam Scott slumped to 10 strokes adrift of the second-round leader with a lacklustre one-over-par 72 on Friday.
Lee was heading in the same direction before catching fire on the back nine at the Yokohama Country Club.
The 27-year-old reeled off six birdies and an eagle to complete the inward nine in just 28 and rocket up the leaderboard.
