The title of England's oldest pub is a prestigious one, and it's also a hotly contested issue. A Greene King inn near St Ives is vying for the honour, claiming that its site has been serving alcohol for nearly 1,500 years.
The Old Ferry Boat Inn in Holywell claims to have roots in Anglo-Saxon England. While its thatched roof and stone walls are of a much later date, legend has it that people have been able to booze on the spot since 560 AD.
This predates the Viking invasion and is over 500 years before the Norman Conquest, meaning the pub's website lays claim to being the oldest in England. But, it is hard to verify the Cambridgeshire inn’s claim to ancient fame.
