France’s Culture Minister, Rachida Dati, confirmed on Sunday that a theft occurred at the Louvre Museum.
“A robbery took place this morning at the opening of the Louvre Museum,” she wrote on X.
The museum announced it would close for the day “for exceptional reasons,” with sources reporting that the thieves fled with jewellery, according to AFP.
“No injuries reported. I'm on site with museum staff and police,” Dati added.
A member of her team told AFP that at least one person had entered the museum. Details about the stolen items have not yet been disclosed. The Louvre, home to iconic works such as the Mona Lisa and Venus de Milo, is one of the most visited cultural institutions in the world.
