Poor Ange Postecoglou. Sacked by Nottingham Forest after just 39 days as manager. Football, like much of modern work, no longer trades in patience or loyalty. But what struck me about the news wasn’t the self-evident absurdity – it was how familiar the story feels to anyone of a certain age. For many in our fifties and sixties, being suddenly deemed surplus to requirements is an occupational hazard.

The employment rate of 50- to 64-year-olds has still not recovered from the pandemic years, when our rate of job loss almost tripled . Older employees are significantly more likely to face redundancy than younger ones, and women are still being hit disproportionately.

The statistics reflect a deeper truth: experience, once prized, can now be a liability. The workplace has been reprogrammed
