Erie residents are gearing up for the upcoming winter season as meteorologist Tom Atkins prepares the community following last year's lake-effect snowstorm after Thanksgiving.

To help residents better prepare for winter weather, the National Weather Service hosted a Sky Warn course at the Hirt Auditorium in the Blasco Library.

The Sky Warn course, held twice a year, educates attendees on how to observe weather patterns and prepare for seasonal changes.

Last year's lake-effect snowstorm served as a reminder of the importance of being prepared for severe weather conditions.

With the knowledge gained from the Sky Warn course, Erie residents are expected to be better equipped to handle the challenges of the upcoming winter.
