UNION COUNTY, N.C. (WTVD) -- Three backyard flocks in North Carolina have tested positive for bird flu.
The North Carolina Department of Agriculture (NCDA &CS) says says flocks in Union, Rutherford and Guilford counties have become sick in the last 30 days.
Bird flu can be transmitted through the feces of migrating birds. This type of HPAI virus is considered low risk to people, the U.S. Centers Disease Control said, but highly contagious to other birds.
"HPAI has been found in wild birds throughout the state so reports of positive backyard flocks will likely happen on occasion," said Dr. Mike Martin, state veterinarian. "I encourage our commercial and backyard flock owners to continue to follow strict biosecurity measures and if your flock is experiencing a sudden higher-than-norma
