COLUMBUS, Ohio — The Columbus Zoo and Aquarium announced the name of a baby bonobo that was recently born.

The zoo named the bonobo Winstel in honor of Don Winstel, a beloved zoo member for more than 36 years.

According to a social media post from the zoo, Don began his journey there in March 1972 and was integral in helping it acquire bonobos in 1990.

Don forged the zoo’s connection with Claudine André, founder of the world's only bonobo sanctuary, Lola Ya Bonobo, the post says. He remained within the zoo’s organization until retiring from his position as Assistant Zoo Director of Animal Care and Conservation in November 2008.
