Israeli artillery and fighter jets renewed their attacks on Gaza on Sunday, in what Israel called retaliatory action against ceasefire violations, a resumption of explosive hostilities that threatened the tenuous calm of the past week.
The Israel Defense Forces said the strikes in the southern city of Rafah, which once again brought plumes of black smoke billowing from Gaza, were a response to the firing of an anti-tank missile by Hamas which the group denied.
Israel said it acted to destroy tunnels used by militants in an area near the principal humanitarian crossing into Gaza that will remain closed for now, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office said this weekend.
