The recent young Republican group chat scandal is bigger than you think, according to a conservative.
New York Times columnist David French, a former writer for the conservative National Review, wrote an article on Sunday called, "Trump Is Dragging Us Down to His Level" in which he argues, Donald Trump has a role in the major GOP scandal that saw young professionals engaging in racist and sexist behavior.
"There’s a larger story here," French wrote. "When you combine all the elements — yet another Republican racism scandal, death wishes from a Democratic politician, Vance’s decision to excuse the inexcusable — you can see the ways in which 10 years of Trumpism have twisted the American soul."
The columnist continued:
"I know very well that there were corrupt and venal politicians and political staff members before Donald Trump. I know that America has endured periods of more extreme anger and polarization than we’re enduring today (and not just in and around the Civil War). But we’re currently trapped in a dynamic that is tempting many millions of Americans to indulge their worst impulses."
According to French's essay, "Every year, more Americans are coming of political age in this dreadful time. By the time Trump leaves office in 2029, he will have been the dominant American political figure for roughly 14 years — since the weeks after he announced his first run for president and surged to the top of Republican primary polls."
"That means 14 years of escalating political stakes. That means 14 years of politics that pushes the best people out of public life. That means 14 years of Trump as the model of the most successful politician of the era. At the end of that time, what will remain?" he asked Sunday. "The story of this past week is the story of this past year. It’s the story of this decade. If your political opponents represent ultimate evil, then the only morality left is the morality of victory. The only true sin is the sin of defeat."
