Sarnia Fire Chief Jeff Weber has declared Monday and Tuesday special occasion days under the city’s fireworks bylaw for Diwali, a festival of lights holiday for followers of Hinduism, Sikhism and Jainism.

The declaration allows private displays of fireworks from dusk to 11 p.m. on special occasion days, Oct. 20 and 21 in Sarnia, as well as one day prior and one day following, the city’s fire service said in a public notice.

“Diwali is one of the major festivals celebrated by Hindus, all over the world,” along with Sikhs and Jains, said Pratap Rawat, president of the Sarnia Hindu Society . “Most of the Eastern religions celebrate Diwali.”
