Former Mariners catcher and first baseman and Jays prospect Jesús Montero has died at age 35. According to a GoFundMe set up by his family, he was in a motorcycle accident earlier this month.
Montero, from Venezuela, was once one of baseball’s top prospects but had his major league career cut short by poor performance, injuries and two performance-enhancing drug suspensions.
He made his big league debut for the Yankees in 2011 at age 21. He was traded to Seattle before the 2012 season and spent four seasons with the team, appearing in 208 games and slashing .247/.285/.383. Montero was suspended 50 games in 2013 as part of the Biogenesis scandal.
