The coach firings keep coming in college football. Not long after Billy Napier of Florida was fired, Colorado State parted with Jay Norvell. We were expecting a Norvell to be canned on Sunday, but that was Mike Norvell of Florida State. Jay got fired first, as Pete Thamel of ESPN reported.
An 18-26 record in four seasons speaks for itself. Norvell, who was a former Nevada head coach and a former assistant at Texas and Oklahoma, is a football lifer. At age 62, it would appear his head coaching days are over. No Group of Five program would want him back as a head coach. Norvell has been coaching college or pro football since the 1980s. He would make an excellent position coach in either the NFL or the college game. He offers a reminder that hundreds of people are good at coaching positions. It's a great career path. Norvell followed that path for close to 30 years. He finally tried head coaching and found he wasn't great. There's no shame in trying. Now Norvell will consider his next move. So will Colorado State.
The Rams have been irrelevant in the Mountain West in recent years. They need someone to rejuvenate their program. Where they go is anyone's guess. With the coaching carousel spinning at a rapid pace, there will be a lot of job turnover and therefore plenty of options for Colorado State to consider.
