Since 2022, U.S. citizens have been able to select "X" as their gender marker on passport books and cards, in addition to "M" for males and "F" for females. While several countries do not recognize nonbinary identities or the "X" designation on identification and immigration documents, some countries legally do.
However, U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) this week introduced a rule requiring airlines to disregard the "X" gender marker on passports and instead record travelers as either "M" or "F." The rule comes on the heels of an incident in which an off-duty CBP officer allegedly shouted at a Canadian visitor to "never come to the U.S. again," forcing a managerial review by the CBP.
