A dejected-looking Justin Fields sat with a towel over his head on the Jets’ bench as the second half of another lifeless Jets game began.
A few yards away, backup quarterback Tyrod Taylor was warming up. As the Jets offense prepared to take the field for their first drive of the half, both quarterbacks put their helmets on and shared a fist-bump.
Then Taylor took the field, met by light cheering from fans who haven’t had much to celebrate this year.
As the threat of a seventh straight loss became a likely reality, the Jets finally benched Fields, whom they brought in this year to be their starting quarterback, in the third quarter of Sunday’s matchup against the Panthers as they trailed 13-3.
