LOUISVILLE, Ky. —

After five years, the ACLU of Kentucky and a New York law firm have reached a settlement withthe Louisville Metro government over the city's response to the 2020 racial justice protests.

The lawsuit claimed LMPD used excessive force against protesters following the deaths of Breonna Taylor and George Floyd, violating the First and Fourth Amendment rights of protesters.

The ACLU says that the city’s response to the peaceful demonstration was violent and notes instances where LMPD used tear gas, flash bangs, pepper balls, and other weapons on the crowds, causing injuries to those expressing their right to protest peacefully.
