SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI)-- The County of San Diego is hoping the public can help find the owner of a puppy that was taken to its Bonita shelter with a severe collar injury.

The County reports that a 10-month-old shepherd was taken to the shelter on Oct. 13 with a severe neck injury after its chain collar became embedded in its skin.

It said veterinary staff had to surgically remove the chain to treat the puppy's wound. The puppy is now recovering, according to the county, but is expected to have another surgery.

Animal Services has not been able to track down the owner, despite the puppy being microchipped.

The Animal Services Director, Vaughn Maurice, said once the puppy is fully healed it will be neutered and vaccinated. It will then be ready for a new home.
