There is no perfect society, but American democracy is a governmental system that established a set of freedoms to make it possible to continually improve society. This takes place primarily because the freedoms, particularly freedom of speech and freedom of the press are maintained and protected.
Among the imperfections in American society, the greatest have been in the treatment of minorities, beginning with slavery, then in treatment of Native Americans and immigrants, and continuing in the long succeeding years of racial discrimination. These years of discrimination extended to as recently as the Civil Rights struggle, which I remember clearly.
