Ace Pakistan batter Babar Azam has stormed back into the ODI captaincy race as head coach Mike Hesson has triggered talks around Mohammad Rizwan’s removal from the post with a letter to the Pakistan Cricket Board, according to a report in Geo News. The new skipper could remain in charge through the 2027 ODI World Cup in South Africa.

Rizwan was named ODI skipper by the Pakistan Cricket Board in 2024 and guided Pakistan to wins in Australia, Zimbabwe and South Africa.

However, his captaincy has faced scrutiny after the home tri-series final defeat to New Zealand, a disappointing early exit from the Champions Trophy on home soil and a series loss in the Windies.
