A rainstorm approaching Long Island on Sunday night and continuing into Monday could bring flooding to coastal areas on the South Shore of Nassau and Suffolk counties, according to the National Weather Service.

"We have a cold front that approaches from the west tonight," Brian Ciemnecki, a meteorologist at the weather service, said Sunday. "And it's going to bring some showers and some gusty winds to the area tomorrow morning."

The rain is expected "right during that morning commute and the school bus pickup time, unfortunately," Ciemnecki said.

The weather service issued a flooding statement that said "the most vulnerable locations near the waterfront and shoreline" may have "brief minor flooding" on Monday.

"But we’re not looking at widespread coastal flooding," Ciemnecki said.
