The deteriorating air quality in Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR) remains a major concern for residents. The Air Quality Index (AQI) often reaches alarming levels in the national capital and neighbouring cities during Diwali and the winter season every year. Multiple factors, such as bursting of firecrackers, emission from vehicles and industries, stubble burning and construction activities, among others, contribute to deteriorating air quality in Delhi-NCR.
This Diwali, with the air quality plummeting to the ‘very poor’ category, the government has imposed Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP)-II restrictions. The Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM), a statutory body, has placed Delhi and neighbouring areas under enhanced GRAP-II restrictions, alarming AQI levels.
