Supreme Leader of Iran Ali Khamenei took a jab at Donald Trump Monday over airstrikes the president authorized back in June, which Trump has repeatedly claimed “obliterated” Iran’s nuclear capabilities — despite an internal Pentagon report undermining those claims.
“The US President boasts that they’ve bombed and destroyed Iran’s nuclear industry,” read a social media post from Khamenei’s official government X account Monday morning. “Very well, in your dreams!”
Trump’s strike on Iran proved controversial at the time, including among many of his most diehard supporters, including Rep. Marjorie Taylor Green (R-GA), Trump’s former White House chief of staff Steve Bannon, and the late right-wing influencer Charlie Kirk, who was killed last month.
Trump immediately declared the strikes as a complete success, with his special envoy to the Middle East Steve Witkoff saying the attack had set Iran’s nuclear program back by a matter of “years.” News outlets soon got ahold of a leaked Pentagon report, however, casting doubt on those claims, and concluding that the strikes may have only set back Iran’s nuclear program by a matter of months.
In response to the media’s coverage of the leaked Pentagon report, Trump threatened to sue a number of news outlets, threats that were ultimately challenged by many publications that refused to retract their coverage.
Khamenei has been known to take jabs or make light-hearted comments on social media, with a number of his old posts
being unearthedlast summer in which he
offered marriage advice, commented
on the Black Lives Matter movement, and wrote
poetry.
