Doug Martin, a former NFL running back known for his bruising style and unique nickname, has died, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers announced.

He was 36.

In a statement , Tampa said it was “deeply saddened” to lose Martin, who was described as a “fan favorite” who made “a lasting impact on our franchise.” He was selected one of the top 50 players in franchise history as part of 50-year anniversary celebrations this year.

A family statement said his cause of death has not been determined, but KTVU-TV in San Francisco reported he died after suffering an unspecified medical emergency while in the custody of the Oakland Police Department.
