The Mathewson monkey has collected its share of scars over the past 150 years or so.

There’s a clear open wound on his forehead. His fur is matted, but clean … eyes clouded but still focused. There appears to be a band over one wrist — an aged covering of sort, no doubt keeping the good stuff in and the bad stuff out. And his hands and feet? Who knows what tragedies have left them cut and unhealed.

Peterborough’s Vince Mathewson has posted the creature for sale on Facebook Marketplace — a move he admits to some reluctance, and that’s partly evident in the price he’s asking. He’s looking for $500.

“It’s a very interesting piece,” says Mathewson. “It’s actually been in my family for close to, I guess not 200 years, but 150 or close to it.”
